Shoulder replacement surgery is an invasive procedure in which the entire or partial part of the glenohumeral joint is replaced by an implant. It helps in relieving severe shoulder joint pain caused by arthritis or post injury.
The shoulder will be placed in an immobilizer for the first few hours after the surgery. The patient would be encouraged to move it after a day and subsequent physiotherapy aids in faster recovery.
Patients can resume regular duties within a few weeks, without mounting heavy loads and exerting pressure.
Shoulder Replacement surgery is required by the patients suffering from osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, rotator cuff tear arthropathy, avascular necrosis where blood flow to the bone gets disrupted and also post injury.
Shoulder is a joint comprising ball and socket, where upper arm bone fits into the shallow outlet. When this joint gets damaged, it causes severe pain, stiffness and weakness making it hard to move and carry on with daily functioning.
Shoulder replacement surgeries are of three types: Total shoulder replacement, Reverse total shoulder replacement and Partial shoulder replacement.
During the surgery, the damaged areas of the bone are removed and replaced with prosthesis for relieving the pain and helping the joints function smoothly. Your surgeon might recommend a full or partial shoulder replacement depending on the conditions.
