Hip replacement or total hip arthroplasty is a surgical procedure where the expert surgeon removes the damaged parts of the hip joint and restores them with prosthetic parts made either by metal, ceramic or very hard plastic for eliminating pain and better functioning.
Also called total hip arthroplasty, hip replacement surgery might be an option if hip pain interferes with daily activities and nonsurgical treatments haven’t helped or are no longer effective. Arthritis damage is the most common reason to need hip replacement.
Patients can slowly resume duties within 2 to 3 weeks, post-surgery and the patient might require physiotherapy and assistance while walking for the first few days, to ensure faster recovery.
Hip replacement is a viable option for those patients suffering from severe pain caused due to worn-out, damaged joints, thus reducing mobility. It is also needed for patients experiencing chronic pain caused by rheumatoid arthritis, hip fracture, septic arthritis, bone dysplasia or unusual bone growth.
Performed under general anesthesia, hip replacement is done by making an incision into the hip for removing the damaged part of the hip joint and then replacing it with an artificial implant. The surgery takes around 2 hours to complete.
