Total Knee Arthroplasty in a Complex Varus Deformity Knee: Defying the Odds

Total Knee Arthroplasty

At Sunway Medical Centre, we’re proud to showcase a remarkable achievement in orthopedic care – a successful Total Knee Arthroplasty (TKA) performed on an 85-year-old woman with a severe complex varus deformity. Under the leadership of Dr. Madan Mohan Reddy, our expert orthopedic team tackled this challenging case, demonstrating expertise and determination.

Patient Profile: The patient, an 85-year-old grandmother, presented with a 25° varus deformity, 10° flexion deformity, advanced osteoarthritis, and difficulty walking. Despite her age and medical challenges, her goal was clear: to regain mobility and dance at her grandson’s wedding.

Procedure: The complex surgery involved correcting the significant angular deformities while preserving joint function. Advanced imaging techniques, including 3D CT scans, allowed for precise planning. Robotic-assisted surgery was employed to ensure optimal alignment and stability. Intraoperative periosteal release and custom instrumentation addressed bone defects, ensuring proper knee alignment.

Outcome: Three weeks post-surgery, the patient’s knee alignment was within 2° of neutral, with complete extension achieved. Her pain decreased significantly, and she was able to walk with minimal assistance, preparing to attend her grandson’s wedding.

This success highlights the effectiveness of expert orthopedic care and advanced surgical techniques in overcoming even the most complex cases.
