Total joint replacement or arthroplasty is a surgical procedure where parts of damaged joints are removed and then replaced with a prosthesis device made from hard plastic, ceramic or metal.
Prosthesis is in general used for knee and hip replacements and besides other joint replacement surgeries including ankle, wrist, shoulder and elbow.
The recovery after a joint replacement may take up to a couple of weeks. The patients are encouraged to move the joint within a few hours of the surgery and might need physiotherapy. Pain would completely resolve in a few weeks.
Arthroplasty is prescribed for the patients with joint pain, caused by damaged cartilage (articular cartilage) lining the ends of bones, often due to arthritis or a fracture. Joint replacement is a last resort for the patients for whom medications, physiotherapy and other conservative types of pain management failed to provide relief.
During the surgical procedure, the surgeon makes an incision and removes the damaged portion of the bone from the joint. It is then replaced by prosthesis, for performing the function of bone.
